Answers

  1. Briefly, what can I customize in the program?
This version allows you to fully customize the window layout to suit your monitor size, type of puzzle and personal tastes. Once you have customized it to your tastes and convenience, you can save the customization so that every future session will start up with the same layout.

First, you can select amongst a number of different layout categories that determine how the clue windows and the grid window are placed in relation to one another. The clues can be in the main window, on any side of the grid or in separate windows. One type of layout may be better for certain types of crosswords than others. Experiment.

Next, you can resize any of the windows or the individual panes in a window to suit your tastes. You can maximize grid area by making the clue lists small enough to display just the current clue.

You can also scale the grid up and down in small increments depending on the screen real estate, monitor resolution, eye comfort, etc., to find a size that is suitable.

You can also remove the Toolbar and the Statusbar if you prefer a minimalistic approach or a larger more useful screen real estate.

Once you have found a comfortable layout, select Save Configuration in the Preference menu to save the customization.

  2. You can change most colors and fonts in Unix versions by defining X resources. See online documentation for details.

  3. I customized the layout but the next time the program came up with the default/previous layout. What am I doing wrong?
Make sure you explicitly select the Save Configuration in the Preference menu before you exit Across Lite. Also, see the Troubleshooting section of the packaged online helpfile for a number of tips on other things to check for.
