Answers

  1. How do I switch between Across and Down directions?
All versions: With a mouse, click the left button on a cell in the desired word and drag at least one cell in the direction you wish before releasing the button.

In Windows and OS/2, click right mouse button on grid. Select Switch Direction from the popup menu.

Use Ctrl+ Right Arrow or Down Arrow keys (except under some Unix window managers) to switch at the current place.

Using the arrow keys to move around the grid automatically switches the current direction to the direction you are moving.
  2. I click on a clue in the clue list and then I start entering the letters. Nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?
No. That is the way it is. The short answer is double click on a clue in the clue list, if you want to start entering the letters in the grid after the clue selection. Here is the reason why. In order to satisfy user interface guidelines set forth by the respective operating system manufacturers, we treat each of the window components in an uniform way. Whenever you click on one of the standard components (such as a listbox in this case), the keyboard focus shifts to that component. This will allow you, for example, to use the arrow keys in the keyboard or page-up and page-down keys to traverse the list. When you enter a letter, it is simply ignored by the list boxes (in this version; in advanced versions you can do in-place editing of clues and so entering letters while the keyboard focus is in the list box is equivalent to editing the clues). To allow you to shift the keyboard focus back to the grid, you can either click on a cell in the grid or double-click on a clue in the clue list which will select that clue, select the corresponding word in the grid and shift the keyboard focus back to the grid.
  3. Can I make the fonts smaller/bigger?
You cannot change the fonts in this version (except for Unix versions where you can define X resources). However, the ZoomIn and ZoomOut commands enlarge/shrink the grid in small increments and hence the fonts used for the grid.
  4. How do I unlock/unscramble the solution?
Select Unscramble from the Solution Menu. In the dialog box that pops up, enter the 4-digit key provided for that puzzle. Click on OK. If the key is correct for that puzzle, the solution will be unlocked and unscrambled and made available for checking and/or revealing. Once unscrambled, the puzzle can be saved with the solution unscrambled.
  5. None of the commands in the Solution menu can be selected? What do I do?
This can only happen if there is no solution at all in the puzzle as opposed to scrambled/unscrambled solution being present.
  6. Can I enter non-alphabets into the grid?
No, not in the current version. Future versions will allow it at some point.
