Solution: There is a Mac Library called CarbonLib that is required to run this program on computers with Mac OS prior to 10.x. In Mac OS 9.x, this library was included with the operating system but some of the older versions had problems. In Mac OS 8.x, this library must be installed to run this program.
You can download this library from apple.com along with instructions.
Solution: The early version of Mac OS X had too many bugs and problems for us. While we could point to a number of ways to update the OS with the correct libraries, by the time this is accomplished, it may have unpleasant side-effects. We strongly recommend upgrading Mac OS X to version 10.2 or later as you will continue to have problems with OS X for other programs. In the short term, we recommend that you use the 1.2 version of Across Lite.
Solution: The Across Lite program is found inside the Across Lite 2.0 folder which is created when you download the software. It has the icon of a crossword grid with a pencil in front of it. Make sure that you are not trying to open the crossword with the downloaded bundled file acl2mac.hqx which is not required after the download is completed and the Across Lite folder is created.
Solution: Mac OS Finder has a problem with multiple programs with the same creator signatures present on the computer and provides inconsistent results on which application is used. It is best to keep just one copy of Across Lite. Move the previous version to backup or a diskette.
When you configure your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari) to use Across Lite as a helper application, sometimes it is difficult to make the setting stick if it was already configured with the previous version. Repeating the process a couple of time seems to eventually make the program select the new program.
Solution: You cannot open a freshly downloaded puzzle by double-clicking on it. Either drag and drop the puzzle file over the Across Lite program icon in the Across Lite program folder or start up Across Lite program by double-clicking on the Across Lite program icon in the Across Lite program folder and use the File->Open command in the Across Lite program to read in the puzzle file.
Solution: What you are seeing is the edit window for entering multiple letters that go into the same cell. It comes up if you click on Esc key on your keyboard. You can click on Esc key to dismiss that window if you want it to ignore whatever has been entered into the edit window. Click on return if you want the program to take the letters you have entered (up to 8 letters) as the solution for the current cell.
Solution: The clue and grid areas in Across Lite are resizeable and are separated by bars that can be clicked and dragged to relatively resize the areas within the Across Lite window. Sometimes, these bars get pulled towards one end or the other making one of those areas too small to be seen. Look for a separator bar near the edges of the Across Lite window and click and drag it towards the middle to expose the areas on either side of the bar.
Solution: First, use the Options command in Across Lite to select the Tool preferences and ensure that the Timer is installed (there should be a list item for the Timer). If the button below the list reads Enable, then click on it and see if the Timer appears.
Solution: These symbols are provided by a special font called Webdings that are part of most standard Windows operatig system install. It appears that this font may have been corrupted or removed on your computer. You can either install this from the Webdings folder in your Across Lite 2.0 folder. See instructions for this in the same folder.
Solution: The one click command uses a printer designated as the default printer on your computer. If there is more than one printer installed on your computer, make sure you check the printer designated as the default printer for the output. This may have changed inadvertantly. If there is no printer installed or there is no default printer, then nothing will be printed.
Solution: Most likely, the printer driver for your printer is defective or has become corrupted. We recommend downloading the latest printer driver from your printer's manufacturer's web site and installing it. That should correct problems like these.
